Three Land Rover Freelander Versions Offered in Africa

Land Rover recently announced it has released three limited edition versions of the LandRover Freelander to its African markets. They are the Land Rover Freelander Kalahari for the sporty and adventurous, Freelander Kilimanjaro for the busy go-getter executive and the Freelander Serengheti for the outdoor-loving family.

"The African theme was chosen to inject excitement and freshness to the Freelander, which occupied the premium segment in the 4X4 lifestyle vehicle category," said Land Rover Malaysia managing director Ali Shuib in a prepared statement. He added that Land Rover will be producing just 100 units of each to maintain exclusivity. The SUVs are to be powered by either a 2.0-liter four-cylinder turbo-diesel or a 2.5-liter V6 gas engine combined with a five-speed automatic transmission featuring 'CommandShift' that provides a choice of sport, fully automatic or manual operation. "Each version comes with its own special colour and is packaged with its own distinctive set of premium accessories that results in at least 30% savings compared to if purchased separately," Mr. Shuib said.

The Freelander Kalahari, finished in Kalahari Orange, is specially accessorised for the sporty. It comes with a set of 18-inch sports rims and wheels, body styling kit, A-frame and stainless steel protection tubes that enable the vehicle to be taken off-road. The Land Rover Freelander Kilimanjaro, finished in Kilimanjaro Green, comes with luxurious and sophisticated features such as a Bluetooth-enabled mobile communication system, burr walnut finish, reverse sensors equipped with camera, and a premium high fidelity entertainment system with 10-disc CD changer, sub-woofer and amplifier. The Freelander Serengheti, which comes in Serengheti Grey, is targeted at the family who loves the outdoors and shares the passion for travelling together. Body graphics, lamp guards and safari lamps give the vehicle a rugged outdoor look. A specially designed Land Rover Freelander roof rack, which comes complete with a ladder, offers more luggage space while a premium DVD entertainment system with wireless headphones keeps passengers occupied during long journeys.

2005 Nissan Xterra Pricing Announced

Nissan North America, Inc. recently announced its new pricing on the 2005 Nissan Xterra SUV. The company also stated that the new 2005 Nissan Xterra offers several improvements on functional and user attributes including more roominess, power, and features and enhanced off-road performance systems. The 2005 Xterra arrives in three trim levels – S, Off-Road and SE, with each version equipped with a standard 4.0-liter 265-horsepower V6 engine and available in either 2WD and 4WD.

The base price of the Xterra S 2WD M/T is $20,800, the Xterra Off-Road model with 4WD M/T begins at $25,500 and the Nissan Xterra SE 2WD A/T starts at $25,300. Enhancements of the redesigned vehicle include a redesigned exterior and interior, new engine and platform. The 2005 Xterra utilizes a modified version of the F-Alpha platform, developed for the full-size Nissan Armada and full-size Nissan Titan pickup truck. Specifically, the Xterra platform uses an independent double-wishbone front and solid axle leaf spring rear suspension, standard 4.0-liter DOHC V6 engine that produces 265 horsepower and 284 lb-ft of torque. A choice of 6-speed manual transmissions or 5-speed automatic is also available.

The 2005 Xterra includes an enhanced off-road system that utilizes a part-time 4WD system with 2WD-4HIGH-4LOW modes and electronically controlled transfer case. Also available is a Vehicle Dynamic Control (VDC) system and other advanced off-road capabilities. The exterior includes a redesigned and extrememly functional Nissan Xterra roof rack that also comes with a covered cargo box. The interior offers more 2nd row head room and leg room, and enhanced utility of the multi-purpose cargo area that includes an Easy Clean Cargo Area and a Utili-Track channel system in the cargo floor.

2005 Nissan Frontier Delivers Most Power in Small Truck Class

Truck industry insiders report that in the compact pickup truck class the 2005 Nissan Frontier truck delivers the most horsepower at 265 hp. Nissan Motors officials recently stated the 4.0-liter engine is new for 2005 and offers 284 pounds-feet of torque. On sale since December 2004, the new Nissan Frontier pickup truck is offered in extended or "King" and "Crew" cab styles. The King cab has two small, rear-hinged doors to access the rear seating area. The Crew version has four conventional front-hinged doors and a rear bench seat. A classic or "regular" cab model was discontinued several years ago.

The King cab model offers a longer 6ft cargo bed than the crew version at 5ft. Payload ratings range from 1,000 pounds to approximately 1,500 pounds. Trailer towing capacities range from 3,500 to 6,500 pounds. The prices for Frontier models begin at about $16,000 for a version with rear drive only, five-speed stick shift and a 2.5-liter, 154-hp four-cylinder engine with no air-conditioning. Nissan stated both the 4 and 6 cylinder engines are designed to run on regular unleaded gas. Frontier base prices continue up to $27,330 for a Crew cab, four-wheel drive, V-6, automatic-transmission.

2005 Nissan Frontier safety features include curtain-type side-impact air bags to protect the head and help prevent ejections in rollovers, electronic stability control, hill descent control for offroading, and hill starting assist, which prevents vehicle rollback when starting off uphill. Other standard and optional features include a spray-in bed liner, a C-channel system for tying down cargo, sunroof, Nissan Frontier roof rack, leather interior, power seats, and stereos with MP3 and satellite radio capability.

The new Frontier has 9.8 inches of more space between its axles and as much as 5.6 inches more in overall length over the 2004 Nissan Frontier. The 2004 version also was available with no more than 210 horsepower. Previously, manual transmission had only five speeds, the automatic version had only four, brakes were drums in the rear, not discs. Also there were no side air bags in the 2004 Frontier pickup.

Kia KCD-II Mesa SUV Concept Vehicle Unveiled

Kia Motors America unveiled the KCD-II Mesa, the second Kia concept vehicle developed by the Kia California Design Center in Irvine, Calif. The Kia Mesa represents Kia's vision of a new SUV designed with the North American market in mind. The KCD-II is a modern, rugged body-on-frame SUV that features three rows of seats, dual full-length sunroofs and an expansive 116" wheel base. Tom Kearns, chief designer stated "The Mesa's highly usable interior design leans toward minimalism, while the exterior portrays the unique go-anywhere, do-anything attitude that Kia buyers have come to expect from the brand."

The Kia Mesa exterior styling is rugged, yet functional with the practical utility offered in a large SUV. Designers pushed the imposing, custom-built 22" alloy wheels to the corners of the vehicle in an effort to maximize interior space while simultaneously creating stable, responsive handling characteristics. Peter M. Butterfield, Kia president and CEO, stated "Designed to be rugged enough for play on the weekends yet sophisticated enough to take to the theater at night and the office on weekdays, the Mesa really brings everything you could ever want in a truck to the table. Whether you work hard or play hard, the Kia Mesa concept SUV can provide the best of both worlds."

The Mesa's balanced stance is a result of its stretched wheelbase and extra-wide track. The location of the wheels also provides dynamic stability on or offroad. The vehicle's appearance is further enhanced by sheet metal sculpted to appear lean and taut between muscular fenders, which, stretched over the wheels, offer added rugged protection. Mr. Kearns added "Like Hummer and Jeep, Kia has a history of building military vehicles, and we drew on that legacy to bring utility to life in the Mesa."

The wrap-around windshield shows off a passenger compartment that offers maximum visibility from inside the cabin. The Mesa's high beltline also offers a sense of security and protection. Thick rear pillars add to the vehicle's robust appearance, and outwardly they appear to support the entire roof structure. In fact, the A and B pillars help distribute support, providing a solid structure. The Mesa's functional exterior features center-pivoting Kia roof rack clamps capable of adjusting to hold objects up to 2" thick, such as skis, snowboards, surfboards, ladders, lumber and other construction materials. The adjustable clamps also provide a flush appearance when not in use.

2004 Infiniti QX56 Based on Nissan Pathfinder Armada

Auto industry insiders report the 2004 Infiniti QX56 is based on the Nissan Pathfinder Armada. The Infiniti QX56 includes the same Nissan Armada 5.6-liter DOHC V-8 engine with a 5 speed automatic transmission. However, engine compression is bumped from 9.8:1 to 10.0:1, boosting power output to 315 horsepower and 390 pound-feet of torque. The QX56 is also available in 2WD and 4WD versions.

The Infinity QX56 retains a good portion of the Nissan Armada bodywork, except for the wheel-arch moldings and the area from the A-pillar forward. The simple waterfall grille, large Xenon headlamps, and bulbous fascia help refine the design. Another singular characteristic is a split roof rack, rated to carry 200 pounds.

2005 Lexus GX 470 Receives Interior and Exterior Modifications

Lexus Motors recently reported the 2005 Lexus GX470 has been released with a more powerful V8 and a new sport package including an updated SUV styling. Design enhancements include front and rear light bezels, a dark graphite finish on 17inch alloy wheels and a factory Lexus roof rack on the exterior and dark graphite trim on the center console and instrument panel complementing the black bird's-eye maple wood accents on the interior. The Lexus GX 470 is powered by a 4.7 liter V8 engine that rates from 235 hp to 270 hp. Company spokesmen explained the power gain is generated from variable valve timing with intelligence (VVT-i) system and an electronic throttle control system.

2005 Saab 9-2X Linear & Aero Based on Subaru Impreza Design

Saab has released the compact, five-passenger, 2005 Saab 9-2X hatchback currently selling as the lowest priced Saab with a base price of $23,685. It is the first Saab with all-wheel drive, requiring no input from the driver and works all the time, not just on slippery surfaces. It's also the lowest-priced Saab. Company spokesmen stated that the 9-2X is a "premium compact" and has the rounded front styling of a Saab as well as updated suspension, tires and steering.

With ownership stakes in both Saab and Subaru, General Motors Corp. coordinated the development of the 9-2X, which uses the two Impreza four-cylinder engines and Subaru's all-wheel-drive system and is built at a Subaru factory in Japan. According to Saab, the company hopes to appeal to younger consumers who are younger than Saab's average 41-year-olds and who also prefer a European brand that remains unique.

The 9-2X is available in two levels. The base model is called Linear and includes cruise control, power windows, door locks and outside mirrors, 60/40 split fold-down rear seat, keyless remote entry and manual climate control with air conditioning. The Saab Linear is powered by the 165-horsepower, 2.5-liter, horizontally opposed, single-overhead-cam, naturally aspirated four-cylinder engine that is also found in the Subaru Impreza 2.5 RS wagon. The power plant generates up to 166 foot-pounds of torque at 4,000 rpm. The Saab Aero is powered by a 227-horsepower, 2-liter, horizontally opposed, turbocharged and intercooled four-cylinder engine, just like the one found in the Subaru Impreza WRX. The Saab Aero also includes more features such as automatic climate control, premium audio system with six speakers and fog lamps.

The interior of the 9-2X has streamlined styling and the exterior continues the streamlined theme with no Saab 9-2X roof rack included, unlike the Subaru Impreza & WRX models. All five seats in the 9-2X have head restraints and three-point seat belts. Rear-seat legroom is 33.7 inches, which is the same as the Subaru Impreza and compares with 29.2 inches in the back of the Acura RSX coupe. With rear seats folded there is 61.6 cubic feet of cargo box storage space.

Mercedes-Benz M-Class SUV Redesigned After Eight Years

Auto industry insiders report that after an initial run of nearly 620,000 units in eight years, the Mercedes M-Class Sport Utlility Vehicle is undergoing design changes for its new release in 2005. Considered a true second generation, the M-Class receives a complete redesign inside and out.

The vehicle body is 150 mm longer, 71 mm wider and 5 mm lower, while the wheelbase has also grown by 95 mm. The expanded size creates a larger, more comfortable cabin, with electrically adjustable seats and a more-cushioned 60/40 split rear seat and significantly more cargo space.

Three of the four engines available are also new this year, improving the torque and horsepower of the previous power plants by as much as 38%. A Mercedes-Benz M-Class V6 diesel is now available with either 190 or 224 horsepower.

Nissan Xterra Earns 2005 Active Lifestyle Best Value Vehicle of the Year Award

A team of panelists has chosen the Nissan Xterra as the 2005 Active Lifestyle Best Value Vehicle of the Year. The all-new Xterra SUV now has the same 4 liter, V6 engine as the new Nissan Pathfinder, Frontier and Titan truck. It comes with a choice of either 6 speed manual or 5 speed automatic transmission. The engine delivers 265 horsepower with 284 lbs-ft. of torque. The 2005 Xterra is offered in 2X4 or 4X4 configurations and three trim levels: S, SE and Off-Road.

The off-road package includes Bilstein shocks and springs, skid plates, special wheels and offroad-trail tires, an electronic locking rear differential, special trim and upholstery. Hill start assist and hill descent control, standard on the Off-Road edition, work to prevent slipping on technical off road ascents. A longer wheelbase gives the new model a larger interior. The seats are well-designed from an ergonomic stance, with active headrests to protect against whiplash and standard lumbar and height adjustment for the driver. The 2005 4X4 Off-Road Xterra has 9.5 inches of clearance from the ground, allowing the SUV to ascend and descend steep hills. Land Rover LR3 Earns 2005 Active Lifestyle Luxury Vehicle of the Year

A team of panelists recently selected the Land Rover LR3, which replaces the Land Rover Discovery, to be the 2005 Active Lifestyle Luxury Vehicle of the Year. One of Land Rover's most powerful models ever built, the LR3 includes a new 4.4-liter engine, which is based on the Jaguar 4.2-liter V-8 engine, and a six-speed automatic transmission. An innovative terrain response system allows drivers to modify the car’s suspension, throttle map, traction control and vehicle height to fit the terrain. The driver uses a rotary dial on the center console to choose one of five settings: mud and ruts, slippery conditions, general driving, sand or rock crawl.

The Land Rover LR3 has a weatherproof chassis that is engineered to navigate through deep standing water escaping damage to the engine or electronic components. Wheel travel of just over 10 inches in front and 13 inches in the rear allows the wheels to maintain contact with the ground on extremely uneven terrain. Electronic traction and dynamic stability control, as well as antilock braking, keep the vehicle from skidding. An electronic parking brake, applied by using a switch on the center console, holds the vehicle in place and automatically disengages as soon as the driver steps on the gas.

The LR3 is available in both five and seven seat variations. On the seven-seat model, both second- and third-row seats fold flat into the floor without removing the headrests when transporting gear in the rear cargo box area. The asymmetrical tailgate design puts the release lever easily within reach. The LR3 comes with standard Land Rover roof rack side rails and optional factory cross bars, and can easily tow a trailer.

Theater-style seating provides all passengers with a good view of the surroundings, while the standard sunroof and rear glass panel allows ample light into the interior. The premium model comes standard with a navigation system for both on and offroad navigating and mapping. Standard safety features include traction control, antilock braking, front, side and side-curtain airbags. The LandRover LR3 begins at $44,995 for the SE model and $49,995 for the HSE premium model.

2005 Nissan Xterra Production Begins

Nissan North America, Inc. reported that the first 2005 Nissan Xterra has rolled off the assembly line, the latest in a series of three truck-based Nissan products that have been significantly redesigned for the 2005 model year. "Our company's product revival began with our 1999 launch of this innovative SUV," stated Dan Gaudette, senior VP of North American Manufacturing and Quality Assurance for Nissan North America, Inc. "With this second generation, we've added more power, room and utility, something our consumers have said they wanted. Nissan Xterra customers - be they on-road or off-road enthusiasts - will not be disappointed in the evolution of this product."

Company spokesmen revealed the 2005 Xterra SUV will be offered in both 4WD and 2WD options and an optional enhanced off-road system. The vehicle is built on Nissan's new "F-Alpha" platform, a modified platform design used in the Titan pick-up truck and Frontier midsize trucks, the Nissan Armada and the Nissan Pathfinder sport utility vehicles.

With enhanced ground clearance, the 2005 Xterra comes in a fully boxed, all-steel clad ladder frame, a steel double-wishbone front suspension that includes a stabilizer bar and rigid leaf spring rear suspension. Features of the interior include more room in front and rear seating areas with added head room. It also has a cargo box system that is similar to the Nissan Titan and Nissan Frontier trucks, which is an adjustable channel Utili-track System making it easier to secure bike racks, gear and other accessories. The prominent over-sized bars of the Nissa Xterra roof rack have been included in this year's redesign as well.

Under the hood of the 2005 Nissan Xterra runs is a 4.0 liter DOHC V6 engine, rated at 265 horsepower and 284 lb-ft torque. The engine is standard in all three models offered; the S, Off-road and SE. The 2005 Xterra's powertrain features a longer stroke specifically tuned for SUV and truck applications. Nissan Pathfinder & Titan Main Reason For Soaring Nissan Sales in December 2004

Nissan Motor Co. announced that its U.S. car and truck sales rose 32.7 percent during December, led by strong sales of the Nissan Titan pick-up trucks and Nissan Pathfinder SUV's which more than doubled from December 2003. Car sales increased 15.7% to 44,629 vehicles, and truck sales soared 53.8% to 47,639 vehicles.

The Nissan Pathfinder and the Nissan Titan truck models led sales, with the Murano and Armada SUVs reporting strong results as well. Sales of the Nissan Quest SUV fell 18.6% to 3,206 vehicles. The Nissan Altima sedan is its best selling vehicle and surged to a 37% increase to 19,627 cars in December.

For December, total Nissan-brand sales rose 35.5% to 80,201 vehicles, while total Infiniti-brand sales irose 16.5% to 12,067 vehicles. For the entire 2004 year, the company reported that vehicle sales increased 23.7% to 985,988 units, with car sales rising 5.9% and truck sales soaring 54.9%.

All New Nissan Frontier Pick-Up Truck Released

Th all new Nissan Frontier pick-up truck has been released, and automotive industry insiders are expecting it to compete well against same class competitors including the Chevy Colorado/GMC Canyon, Dodge Dakota and the Toyota Tacoma. The Frontier looks to be moving away from the compact class and into the mid-size truck class. The new Nissan Frontier has a larger wheelbase by 9.8 inches.

The Frontier Crew Cab's rear cargo box now measures four feet long, while the King Cab measures in at just over six feet. The short pick-up bed includes built-in tracks and tie-downs, a spray-in bedliner as well as an optional cargo fence. Additional cargo space is available using the included factory Nissan Frontier roof rack system.

The Nissan Frontier Crew Cab's interior is well designed with safety equipment features that include active head restraints and both side and curtain air bags. A Nissan Altima four-cylinder 2.5-liter engine is standard in the base-trim King Cab. All other pick-ups include the 4.0-liter engine version of the Nissan's VQ V-6, which is also found in the new Nissan Pathfinder. These engines feature variable-valve timing with 265 horsepower and 284 lb-ft of torque. A five-speed automatic is included with a six-speed also available. Kubota Corporation has recently announced it is recalling around 16,000 Kubota RTV900 off-road utility vehicles. The front hoods on the RTV900 utility vehicles have the potential to come off during normal operation and could strike the driver or passenger, possibly causing serious injury.

The RTV900 vehicles are four wheel, off-road vehicles with cargo boxes. The serial number range for the affected vehicles is 10001 - 25883. Kubota Authorized Kubota RTV900 dealers sold the vehicles from January through October with MSRP between $9,899 and $11,199. Owners of the affected models are urged to contact the nearest Kubota RTV900 dealer to schedule an appointment and have the hood inspected and, if necessary, replaced free of charge.

Acura RL Earns Five Star Rating in Crash & Rollover Testing

The Acura RL sedan has been awarded the top U.S. vehicle grade of five stars on all crash and rollover tests, the third vehicle to earn the highest ratings in tests by U.S. auto safety regulators.

The The U.S. auto safety agency performs testing on new car models and redesigned vehicles such as the Acura RL. Controlled procedures include crashing a car into a fixed object to monitor effects on drivers and passengers. A vehicle side crash test, using a sled that slams a vehicle, with resulting assessment of injuries to passengers in the front and rear seats. A car rollover rank is also calculated using test track performance and a formula based on vehicle width and height.

The agency executed 13 crash tests and issued 29 rollover ratings, with the only the Acura RL earning five stars on all crash and rollover tests.

Kia Spectra Earns Insurance Industry's Worst Vehicle Crash Test Rating

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has announced that the Kia Spectra is the first vehicle since 2001 to receive the association's worst safety rating in a frontal crash test.

The Kia Spectra earned the lowest rating of poor after a crash test dummy's head, legs and chest were damaged in a 40 mph crash test. The last vehicle to get a poor rating was the Chevrolet Cavalier in 2001.

"Most manufacturers have figured out how to design vehicles to do a good job protecting people in frontal crashes," said Adrian Lund, the institute's COO. "The Kia Spectra lags behind its competitors."

Kia Motors America Inc. said that it had meetings with institute officials to find out how to improve the car's performance. Kia also said it was comfortable with the level of safety the Spectra currently offers. "Occupant safety is a priority for Kia," Kia responded. "In the development of this car the Spectra has undergone a battery of tests, and we continue to have a high degree of confidence in the real-world protection offered by this vehicle."

The Insurance Institute gave its highest ratings to the Hyundai Elantra and Mazda 3, while second highest ratings of acceptable were given to the Suzuki Forenza and Saturn ION.

Ratings are based on three factors: the amount the vehicle crumples into the driver's space, injuries to the crash test dummy and also a slow-motion analysis of the seat belt at work.

Lund added that, "Besides the Mazda 3 and the Hyundai Elantra, eleven other vehicles have acceptable ratings. They include the Volkswagen New Beetle and VW Jetta, Mini Cooper, Subaru Impreza, Suzuki Aerio, Toyota Corolla, Mitsubishi Lancer, Ford Focus and the Honda Civic." Most of these cars were tested at an earlier date by the insurance institute, who only tests vehicles as they get redesigned.

Kia Motors America (KMA) has announced monthly sales of 23,303 vehicles for November 2004, making it the company's best November sales to date. It is a 44.1% increase over the same month in 2003.

"We're pleased to report strong November sales figures which helped us surpass last year's record yearly sales total with one month remaining in 2004," said Peter M. Suzuki Presents SUV Concept at Detroit International Auto Show

Saab Currently Testing Prototype Infra-red Safety System in Saab 9-3

Saab announced that its engineers are developing a new safety system which uses a pair of miniature cameras with infra-red lenses to monitor a driver's head and eye movements. It detects whenever the driver looks away from what it deems the "primary attention zone" - the center part of windscreen directly in front - and is instructed to react if the eyes and head don't come back to the straight-ahead position within a few seconds.

According to Saab Motors a warning buzzer then sounds, and if the driver doesn't react and respond, then a braking pulse is sent through the Saab ESP braking system. The computer software is engineered to distinguish between busy city driving and open road or highway driving.

The camera system is still in a prototype stage and is being tested in a Saab 9-3. The detection system could have further applications. For instance, Saab stated, it might be able to monitor the driver's eyelid movements and detect any signs of possible dozing off. Other applications could be to store infra-red facial images, recognize individual drivers at the wheel of the same car, and also adjust everything from seat, steering wheel and mirror positions to preferred radio stations.

BorgWarner has begun construction on a new factory in Ningbo, China for the assembly of engines products for the VW-Audi gasoline 4-cylinder engine. The state-of-the-art manufacturing facility will be the first of several operations that are planned for BorgWarner's campus in the Ningbo Yinzhou industrial zone, all of which will be part of BorgWarner Automotive Components (Ningbo) Co., Ltd., the company's newly established wholly foreign-owned enterprise.

The manufacturing plant is expected to be completed in May 2005. "This new facility constitutes another significant investment in Ningbo, and marks another important step forward as we continue to advance our growth strategy for China," said Tim Manganello, BorgWarner Chairman and CEO.

BorgWarner expects that the facility will support production of engine and drivetrain systems and components for several local Chinese automakers. 2005 Mini Cooper S Offers New Performance Options

Mini USA recently announced the availability of a limited slip differential and also an automatic transmission as new options for the 2005 Mini Cooper S. According to Mini USA, the Mini Cooper S and Mini Cooper S Convertible can be optioned with a new limited slip differential, a performance feature coveted by motoring enthusiasts. The limited slip differential helps to divert more torque towards the drive wheel with better traction, ensuring power is transmitted to the road surface more effectively, helping to increase traction under acceleration or during cornering, resulting in improved handling and increased stability.

Manufactured by GKN Driveline, the system is a torque-sensitive differential that manages torque output under acceleration and offers a 30% slip rate. SIRIUS Satellite Radio recently announced that Toyota will be offering SIRIUS, as both an aftermarket and dealer installed option, in nine models including Lexus and Scion models. The program is scheduled to begin in February 2005.

Ford & GM Announce Reductions and Temporary Assembly Plant Down-Time

Following dissappointing sales in November, both Ford and GM have announced cutbacks in production. Hitting most deeply the pickup truck and sport utility lines.

Ford recently reported it will be dropping a shift at its St. Louis plant, where it assembles the Explorer, Mercury Mountaineer and Lincoln Aviator. In February of this year, Ford closed its Edison, N.J., plant, where it manufactured the Ford Ranger pickup. For full-sized truck pick-ups such as the Ford F-150 and Super Duty pickups the automaker has no plans to cut production however.

Temporary shutdowns are ocurring throughout the first quarter at other Ford plants. Notably Ford's Michigan Truck plant in Wayne, Mich., which assembles the Expedition and Lincoln Navigator. Michigan Truck previously operated without an inventory-related shutdown for nearly four years. The plant will be shutting down the week of Dec. 20 and stay closed through the first week of January, says Brian Quantz, vice president of UAW Local 900. The shutdown includes the normal one-week holiday break.

GM has also warned suppliers that it will be reducing production of the mid-sized SUVs. GM will eliminate a Saturday shift at its Moraine, Ohio, plant, which manufactures the Chevrolet TrailBlazer, GMC Envoy, Buick Rainier and Isuzu Ascender. The automaker has told hourly workers to expect downtime at four more plants that produce SUVs and other trucks.

The automaker is eliminating a third shift at a Pontiac, Mich., plant that produces the Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra pickups. About 900 employees will be laid off in January. GM's assembly plant in Arlington, Texas, will also schedule downtime in the first two weeks of January. The plant builds the Cadillac Escalade, Chevrolet Suburban and Tahoe, and GMC Yukon and Yukon XL. The GM assembly plant in Janesville, Wis. will shut down in January, late March and early April. Janesville assembles the Yukon and Yukon XL and Chevrolet Tahoe and Suburban.

The Oklahoma City assembly plant will schedule downtime in early January. Oklahoma City builds the GMC Envoy XL and Envoy XUV and Chevrolet TrailBlazer EXT. When workers return Jan. 18, GM will reduce the line speed, cutting production by 20 percent. And the automaker has announced that the Lansing, Mich., Craft Centre, which builds the Chevrolet SSR pickup, will have downtime the week of Jan. 3, as will the adjacent car plant building the Pontiac Grand Am and Chevrolet Classic.

Recently, GM also announced that it will be laying off nearly 1,000 workers at its Linden, N.J., plant next year as it discontinues the Chevy Blazer and GMC Jimmy SUV models. GM continued to sell the low-priced SUVs after introducing their replacements in 2002. GM also is closing a plant in Baltimore that makes Chevrolet Astro and GMC Safari vans.

Suzuki to Reduce Production of Vehicles Due to Steel Shortage

Suzuki Motor Corporation said it will be reducing Japanese production for a second time in four months because of a steel shortage. Suzuki will be cutting production from January, 2005 to March, spokesman Takuma Mizuyoshi said, confirming a Nihon Keizai newspaper report. The carmaker will make 20,000 units fewer than planned, the report said. Mizuyoshi would not confirm the figure.

Suzuki is cutting production by 13,000 units this month as the high demand for steel from Chinese companies, shipbuilders and appliance makers has made the metal more scarce. Nissan Motor Co., Japan's second-largest carmaker, has also had to scale back production due to a lack of steel. Both companies have turned to Posco, South Korea's largest steelmaker, for assistance.

The shortage in steel was further caused by carmakers such as Nissan, which is releasing six new vehicle models in five months from September to bolster sales, said Itaru Koeda, chairman of the Tokyo-based Japan Automobile Manufacturers Association and a co-chairman of Nissan.

Japan's steelmakers are providing more steel to automakers by reducing their exports and raising their production efficiency, Koeda said. The companies are also improving their technology to be able to produce more sheet steel while using less alloy, he said. Suzuki already buys steel from Posco in Hungary where it makes the Ignis cars, the company's Mizuyoshi said.

The cuts will mean overall production in the second half ending March 31, will rise by a smaller-than-expected 11 percent or 13 percent, compared with a planned 17 percent increase, Suzuki said.
"Suzuki appeared to have mentioned that they would like more steel in working level meetings, but they haven't requested officially,'' Posco's spokeswoman Kim Soo Jung said.

Ford to Launch New Land Rover SUV in North America for 2005

Ford Motor Co.'s Land Rover brand is planning to roll out a new sport utility vehicle in North America next year as way to entice more young buyers, the company said recently. "We aim to sell to a young, affluent, well-educated customer," Land Rover spokesman Larry Rosinski said.

The new LandRover SUV, labeled the Range Rover Sport, will be manufactured in the automaker's Solihull plant in the British Midlands, where new operating and working procedures are being implemented to improve quality and efficiency.

The luxury SUV maker, which is part of Ford's stable of foreign brands dubbed Premier Automotive Group, placed 28th recently in the J.D. Power and Associates 2004 initial quality study, well below the industry average and trailing sister company Jaguar, which was ranked third.

Land Rover stated that it expects the recently-introduced LR3 SUV and the Range Rover Sport, which will be priced below the Range Rover, will help to boost its image and reputation. The Range Rover Sport will be priced above the LR3, which starts at a suggested price of about $45,000 in the U.S., Land Rover said.

Land Rover has recently been hit hard by quality problems, poor exchange rates and somewhat shrinking sales. Its sales in the critical U.S. market are down 19.5 percent so far this year. The company was on shaky financial footing even before Ford bought it in 2000 from BMW. Ford expects the luxury brand to contribute significantly to its mid-decade pretax profit target of $7 billion.

Ford Focus to Compete in 2005 FIA World Touring Car Chamionship

Ford Motors has recently announced that the German Hotfiel Sport team will enter two of its new Ford Focus touring cars in the 2005 World Touring Car Championship. Hotfiel is a long-term Ford team and has previously competed with a three-Focus squad in the German DMSB Produktionswagen Meisterschaft this season with frontrunners Patrick Bernhardt, Thomas Klenke and Michael Funke in the drivers' seats.

The team driver line-up for next year will be unveiled in a future Ford release.The team also co-operated closely with the RS-Line team which drove two Ford Focus cars in the FIA European Touring Car Championship this year.
